Kungsleden Deluxe

A supported midwinter ski tour

Kungsleden deluxe is a supported ski tour that takes you from Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta mountain lodge. We travel light through snow-covered virgin forest and across wide-open alpine landscape staying in cozy mountain cabins. The only thing disturbing the surrounding silence is the creaking sound of our skis sliding across the snow. February is a perfect month for catching a glimpse of the northern light or the great Sarek moose who just like the reindeer migrate up and down the wide valleys.

The 425 km long King’s trail is the most famous trail in Sweden and can be travelled both during winter and summer. Along most of the trail you’ll find self-serviced mountain huts and mountain lodges where you can enjoy the warmth after a chilly day in the mountains. The section we ski basically follows the eastern border to Sarek nationalpark and offers a great variety of landscapes.

This tour is for you want to experience the arctic winter in the mountains without carrying a heavy backpack. For safety reason, you will still have to carry about 5 kg including your lunch and some safety gear. The tour requires moderate skiing skills and the ability to ski a daily distance of between 13-25 kilometers. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding your physical ability or experience level.

Laponia Adventures values nutritious food made from real ingredients and put a lot of effort into preparing the menu for this tour. A typical day starts with a Swedish breakfast and in the evening, we cook dinner together in the hut. Our dinners are inspired by local food from the Sami culture as well as more general Swedish food. As long as weather permits we will have a longer break during the day to eat a lighter lunch and re-energize.

During our time in the mountains we stay in cozy cabin without electricity or running water. We all help with the daily duties as preparing dinner or chopping wood to the fire. Even if the cabins are simple they provide the most essentials as heat, beds, blankets and everything we need for cooking and eating. Outhouses are often situated within 100 meters from the huts. The first and last day of the tour we will stay in hostels where you will share room with other participants of the group. Those days you will have access to both water-toilets and showers.

We work with local guides who have good knowledge of the culture and history in Laponia. They are all certified guides trained in wilderness first aid or live up to the same standard or higher. On this tour, you will be supported by a snowmobile that will carry the food and the heavy part of your equipment. During the days, you will be skiing with your guide carrying only your lunch and safety equipment.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL JOKKMOKK (D)
Jokkmokk is a small town just north of the Arctic Circle most famous for its yearly winter market in the beginning of February. The first night you will stay at Jokkmokk Vandrarhem where you will share a room with other group members. We will all gather in the evening at 18.00 to have dinner together, to check our equipment and to brief you on the upcoming week. If you arrive early, use your day to rest or visit the Sami museum Ájtte. If you travel here by bus book your ticket to Jokkmokk Åsgatan, a bus-stop just outside the hostel.

We arrange transfer from the airports in Luleå. Pick-up latest 15.00.

DAY 2 JOKKMOKK – PÅRTE (B,L,D)
After breakfast we pack the buses/cars and head west to Kvikkjokk (about 2h), a small village in the end of the road. From here we’ll continue on skis through a thick virgin forest and as we gain in elevation the forest will change in character and open up around us. After crossing a few smaller lakes we’ll reach our first cabin named after the Pårte mountain range in Sarek national park.

Distance on skis: 16 km, elevation gain/loss: +200/-50 m, estimated time out skiing: 6-7h

DAY 3 PÅRTE – AKTSE (B,L,D)
The surrounding mountains are rising higher and higher around us as we continue northeast following a chain of lakes. In the end of our impressive 25 km day we’ll reach Aktse, an old homestead started by two brothers in 1829.

Distance on skis: about 26 km, elevation gain/loss: +150/-100 m, estimated time out skiing: 9-10h

DAY 4 DAYTRIP AROUND AKTSE (B,L,D)
In Aktse we have a day to explore the Gate to Sarek and the Rapa delta. If we are lucky we might get a glimpse of the great Sarek moose.

DAY 5 AKTSE – SITOJAURE (B,L,D)
With skins under the skis we climb the steep hill behind the cabin and soon get rewarded by great views from the open tundra. The downhill on the other side gives us some easy kilometers before skiing the last stretch to the hut across lake Sitojaure.

Distance on skis: 13 km, elevation gain/loss: +400/-300, estimated time out skiing: 6h

DAY 6 SITOJAURE – SALTOLUOKTA (B,L,D)
On our last full day in the mountain we ski above the tree line across the mountain following the U-shaped valley Ávtsusjvágge. This is the border between the older bedrock grinded for over billions of years and the newer mountain range created only 400 million years ago. A last downhill takes us down to Saltoluokta mountain lodge where we enjoy a hot sauna and a three-course-dinner in the restaurant.

Distance on skis: 20 km, elevation gain/loss: +100/-400, estimated time out skiing: 7-8h
