Jokkmokk Christmas holiday

Celebrate a white Christmas above the Arctic circle

Jokkmokk is small town just above the arctic circle with many opportunities to experience pure nature and tranquility. During your Christmas week you’ll experience and learn about the Sami culture, meet the reindeers and taste their traditional food. Another day you will slide across frozen lakes behind huskies or search for the great Sarek moose that migrates down from the mountains in the winter.

The days during the arctic winter are short and the darkness comes early. We use the few hours of daylight to experience the fresh and clean air and in the evenings, we enjoy local food and keep our eye open for the northern light. The program gives room for personal excursion, shopping and relaxation.

Slide across frozen lakes behind huskies

This holiday tour is for you who want to experience the nature around Jokkmokk and spend Christmas in a relaxed environment far away from vibrant city life. You must be able to walk on uneven surface and enter a snowmobilesledge. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding your physical ability.

During your time in Jokkmokk you will stay in double rooms at hotel Akerlund, centrally located in Jokkmokk. The hotel has a history that goes back over hundred years but at the same time you’ll stay in a modern room and have access to sauna and relax. You will be served breakfast buffet and dinner at the hotel. Lunch will either be included on your activities or served at the hotel.

We work with local activity companies who have good knowledge of the culture and history in the area. You will also have a host that help you book additional activities and recommend things to do on your own.

Included meals marked each day with B=breakfast, L=lunch and D=dinner

Jokkmokk is a small town where you have everything you need within walking distance. You will be staying at hotel Akerlunds centrally located in Jokkmokk where we gather in the evening to enjoy a three-course-dinner together. Your host for the week will brief you on the upcoming program.

We arrange transfer from the airports in Luleå. Pick-up at 14.00.

We start the day with breakfast buffet at the hotel before  we drive you our friend Helena Läntha who lives just outside Jokkmokk. She comes from a local reindeer herding family and will introduce you to their culture, let you meet their reindeers and taste traditional Sámi food. The afternoon is free to have time to buy the last Christmas presents for your friends and family. We also recommend you to visit Ajtté – the local Sami and mountain museum. In the evening you will be served a lighter dinner followed by a flavor show for all senses performed by Eva Gunnare, a local food connoisseur.

In Sweden Christmas is mostly celebrated on Christmas Eve and we spend the day with family or our closest friends. It is also common to take a walk together during the day to be hungry enough for the Christmas buffet that will be served in the evening. During the day you will have access to a self-guided walk in Jokkmokk to enjoy the winter landscape. The Relax and Sauna room is open for you to warm up after the hike.

The musher will pick you up at the hotel after breakfast and drive you to their ranch just outside Jokkmokk. You will get to know their dogs and go out on a dog sledding tour through the forest and across frozen lakes around Jokkmokk. In the evening, if weather looks promising, we will drive you out to a view point in snowmobile sledges to look for the northern light.

After breakfast we head out with minibuses searching for the great Sarek moose. Protected from the yearly hunting season the Sarek moose grow bigger than its relatives. In the winter, they migrate down to the forest area east of Sarek national park where they find food and protection from the harsh environment in the mountain. We take you to some of the moose’s favorite places.

We finish the day and the week with a three-course-dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast it is time to say good bye and wish you safe travels home.
